Fibers and raw materials

Here is information about the fibers we have in our stock at the moment or which we have used for knitting by customer’s request.

ACRYLIC, PAN

Acrylic is a synthetic fibre, which endures abrasion reasonably well. Acrylic is a light and fluffy fibre and it keeps its measurements well when washed.

Acrylic is often used as wool because of its fluffiness and feel. It is often mixed with other fibres.

COOLMAX® / COOLMAX® FRESHFX™

Coolmax® is a special polyester (synthetic fibre) by Advansa. The fibre does not absorb moisture. When being on the skin, it removes the moisture away from the surface of the skin. This feature is based on the four channelled structure of the fibre, which makes the area of the fibre 20 % larger than that for normal polyester.

Coolmax®-knittings are used especially in work- and sports clothes as well as undergarments. It is easy to maintain and feels soft. Coolmax® is machine washable and dries quickly.

COOLMAX® freshFX™ is a fibre modified from Coolmax®, in which silver ions have been added to the fibre structure. The silver ions reduce bacterial growth, which prevents the growth of bacteria and smell of sweat to build up on the skin. The effect is permanent and it stays in the wash.

ELASTAN / LYCRA®

Lycra® is the registered trademark for the synthetic fibres called elastane by Advansa.

Elastane is a very elastic fibre, which also reverts to its original length. Elastane is always used together with another fibre.

Elastane is used in e.g. ribbed knittings and other such materials, which need to fit and/or to be elastic.

HEMP, HA

Hemp fibres are obtained by dissolving from the stalks of the hemp plants.

The hemp fibres are long rigid and coarse. We use it in our knittings as a mixture yarn.

Hemp is an excellent absorbent of moisture. It also dries fairly quickly and endures moist conditions and microbes very well.

LUREX®

Lurex® is a yarn with metal effect, usually aluminium yarn, which has been coated with a plastic film. It is used for decorative purposes, e.g. to create gold and silver effect.

MODAL, CMD

Modal is cellulose based converted fibre derived from viscose.

It is much like cotton in its properties and it stays better in shape and measure than viscose. Modal is often blended with cotton.

MODACRYLIC, MAC / PROTEX™

Modacrylic is a fibre derived from acrylic, with many of the same characteristics as with acrylic, but with better flame retardancy.

Protex™ is an acrylic fibre that has been modified flame retardant. It is usually used with cotton to combine a high degree of fire safety with comfort.

Protex™ is suited for e.g. undergarments, middlelayer and work clothing for the fire department and for military use, when fire safe total clothing is required.

Protex™/cottonmix has LOI value of over 33 and it meets up with the requirements of the standard EN ISO 11612.

Protex+ contains both antibacterial viscose andProtex™, which makes a fire safe, antibacterial and quickly drying, which is very pleasant to use.

NOMEX®

Nomex® is an aramid i.e. an aromatic polyamide, which is a synthetic fibre, developed by Advansa.

Nomex® is a very strong fibre with high heatresistancy and flame point, which make the fibre very fire safe. It is mainly used for technical products and knittings for protective clothing.

Nomex® is used for the highest degree of protection in e.g. undergarments for race car drivers and firemen’s gloves.

POLYAMIDE, PA

Polyamide is a synthetic fibre with high abrasion resistance and dimensional stability. The weakness of polyamide is that it absorbs colours from other products; therefore polyamide knittings of a light colour should always be washed together with products of the same colour.

There are several different types of polyamides and it is useful for many purposes.

In addition to ordinary polyamides, we also use special polyamides such as Supplex® and Tactel®.

POLYESTER, PES

Polyester is a strong, durable synthetic fibre. It is often used to enhance the durability of the knitting, but also to make the knitting lighter and to prevent it from creasing.

Polyester does not absorb moisture and therefore it has been used for developing profiled fibres for a variety of uses, such as the transfer of dampness from the skin and to insulate warmth. Please see COOLMAX® / COOLMAX® freshFX™, THERMOºCOOL™ Fresh, THERMOLITE®.

POLYPROPYLENE, PP

Polypropylene is a synthetic fibre with excellent durability. It does not absorb moisture – it transfers it. Because of this quality polypropylene is used in i.a. undergarments for sports, where the polypropylene knitting transfers the moisture away from the skin to the next layer of clothing and the skin feels dry. Polypropylene has good dimensional stability in washings.

POLYCOLON®

Polycolon® is a polypropylene fibre developed by Schoeller. Polycolon does not absorb moisture. It transfers it to the next layers of clothing or evaporates it. Polycolon-knittings feel pleasant and they keep their colours well. Polycolon-knittings are light, their density being 41 % less than that of cotton. Polycolon-knittings can be washed in up to 95°C.

COTTON / ORGANIC COTTON, CO

Cotton is a natural fibre and cotton fibres are obtained from the seeds of the cotton plant. Cotton absorbs well and it has a soft and pleasant feel.

Cotton can be washed in high temperatures, typically in 60°C. Cotton shrinks somewhat in the wash, which is good to take into consideration when manufacturing the products.

Cotton is suited for many purposes and therefore it is the most widely produced textile fibre in the world. Cotton is also the most common raw material in knittings made by Orneule.

ORGANIC COTTON

Organic cotton is organically produced cotton. In the cultivation of organic cotton only organic fertilizers are used. No pesticides or chemicals, which would make the leaves fall off the cotton plants, are used. Because of the organic cultivation, the soil stays fertile and the environment will not be burdened with chemicals.

THERMOºCOOL™ FRESH

In the THERMO°COOL™ Fresh –yarn you will find the properties of COOLMAX® freshTX™ and THERMOLITE®. It works in varying circumstances either as a warmth isolating element or as an evaporator of moisture from the skin. COOLMAX® freshFX™ adds an antibacterial feature preventing bacteria from growing, where the smell of sweat and bacteria do not build up on the skin and the product will stay fresh for a longer time. The effect is permanent and sustains washing.

Products made out of THERMO°COOL™ Fresh –yarn are suited, because of the versatility of the material, to various situations and circumstances, where the body temperature changes rapidly under strain or in temperature changes.

TENCEL, CLY

Tencel is lyocell, which is also a man-made fibre from wood pulp. The raw material for Tencel is derived from the eucalyptus. The manufacturing process of Tencel is more ecological than the manufacturing of other man-made fibres from wood pulp.

Tencel is a firm fibre with good dimensional stability. It has a soft and silky feel. Tencel has good absorption properties and it evaporates the moisture from the skin.

Tencel does not crease easily and it drapes beautifully. It is naturally antibacterial and it feels soft on the skin.

THERMOLITE®

This is a polyester fibre developed by Advansa. The fibre is hollow in the middle, which makes its insulating ability good. The fibre and also the knitting is thin, light and pleasantly soft.

The knitting transfers the moisture from the surface of the skin and it is warm because of the hollow structure. The knittings are machine washable and dry quickly.

TREVIRA CS®

A polyester fibre developed by Hoechst. The fibre is flame retardant and complies with the demands of SFS-EN ISO 14116 flame spreading index 1.

MERINOWOOL, WO

Merinowool is a natural fibre obtained from sheep. Merinowool is gathered from the sheep by shearing its wool. There are over 200 different breed of sheep in the world that produce wool.

Merinowool fibre has a good absorption and isolation feature. Merinowool fibre is curly and flexible. Merinowool will dilate when wet and become even curlier. This is why it feels warm even if it is damp as it binds air between the curly fibres.

Merinowool is long fibred and of high quality. Merinowool is soft and feels good on the skin. This is why it is very suited for i.a. undergarments and children’s clothing. All the wools in the Orneule product range are merino wool.

Superwash-merinowool is machine washable. The surface of the fibre has been treated to prevent matting and it will sustain its appearance, also when machine washed. To achieve the best result when washed, a special wool detergent is recommended. Superwash-wool is available in the Orneule product range.

VISCOSE, CV

Viscose is a man-made fibre drom wood pulp, which means that the raw material originates from nature, but it is far refined until it becomes a textile fibre. The raw materials are usually different trees such as birch, fir and pine.

Viscose has a reasonable abrasion resistance and it is very absorbent. Viscose also has a reasonable dimensional stability and it will shrink and crease somewhat in the wash. It is especially important to form the piece of clothing made of viscose after the wash, while damp. This should be remembered with all knittings when washed. The forming will help the viscose garment to stay beautiful and to keep its form in the best possible way.

VISCOSE BAMBOO

Viscose bamboo is a man-made fibre from wood pulp and it is manufactured with the same method as viscose is spun, but the raw material is fast growing and quickly renewing bamboo. Bamboo is durable, stabile and firm as a material. It is very absorbent and breathable. Because of its antistatic feature and softness, it is very pleasant to use, but it may pill a bit. Bamboo is suitable for users with sensitive skin and it is non-allergenic and biodegradable. Because of the breathability and comfort it offers, bamboo is very well suited also for sports clothing and undergarments.
